Colds & Respiratory Illnesses

Colds and respiratory illnesses are common during childhood. Our providers can evaluate symptoms such as coughing, congestion, runny nose, sore throat, and fever and determine whether additional evaluation or treatment is needed.

Flu

Influenza can cause fever, body aches, fatigue, cough, and other symptoms. If your child develops flu-like symptoms, a pediatric sick visit can help determine the appropriate care.

RSV

RSV is a common respiratory virus that can cause mild cold-like symptoms but may be more serious for infants and young children. Our providers can evaluate respiratory symptoms and help parents understand when additional care may be necessary.

Strep Throat

Sore throats can have many causes. When strep throat is suspected, appropriate testing can help determine whether your child has a bacterial infection that requires treatment.

Ear Infections

Fever

Vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal discomfort can occur for many reasons. Our pediatric team can evaluate your child’s symptoms and provide guidance on hydration, nutrition, treatment, and when additional care may be necessary.

When clinically appropriate, our providers may recommend testing to help identify the cause of your child’s symptoms. Testing recommendations are based on your child’s symptoms, age, medical history, and physical examination.

When Should I Call the Pediatrician?

It can be difficult to know when a child’s symptoms require medical attention. If your child has a new, persistent, worsening, or concerning symptom, contacting your pediatrician is a good place to start.

You should consider scheduling a sick child visit if your child:

Has a persistent or concerning fever
Has symptoms that are getting worse
Has a persistent cough or congestion
Complains of significant ear or throat pain
Has repeated vomiting or diarrhea
Develops an unexplained rash
Is unusually tired, irritable, or not acting normally
Is having difficulty eating or drinking
Has symptoms that are interfering with school or normal activities
Has symptoms that concern you as a parent

When to Seek Emergency Care

Some symptoms require immediate medical attention rather than a routine or same-day pediatric appointment.

Seek emergency medical care for serious or life-threatening symptoms, such as significant difficulty breathing, severe dehydration, loss of consciousness, a seizure, severe injury, or other symptoms that appear to be an emergency.

If you believe your child is experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 or seek emergency care immediately.
