Bees and Spiders and Ticks…Oh My!

By Nina Cavalli, MD, FAAP

With the warmer months coming in Florida, that means more outdoor time. And with that comes more encounters with the creepy crawly bugs in our backyards. If your child gets stung or bitten by an insect, you want to make them feel better soon. A big hug, soap, and water are usually enough to manage most situations. But if symptoms persist, here are a few additional options to try.

Bee Stings
If your child is stung by a bee (or wasp, yellow jacket), they will likely have pain at the site and some itchiness, redness, and possible swelling. Symptoms may last a couple of days.

Here’s what to do for a sting:

  • Promptly remove the stinger if it’s sticking out of their skin. The longer it stays in, the more toxin releases, which can worsen symptoms.
  • Wash the area to reduce the risk of infection.
  • Apply ice, which can help minimize pain and swelling.
  • Use calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream to ease itching.

If swelling persists, give your child an over-the-counter antihistamine like Benadryl. An over-the-counter pain reliever like acetaminophen or ibuprofen also helps.

In rare cases, stings may lead to anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction include:

  • Hives l Swelling (face, throat, or mouth)
  • Restlessness or anxiety
  • Wheezing or difficulty swallowing
  • Rapid pulse
  • Dizziness or loss of consciousness

If your child develops any of these symptoms, seek medical help immediately

Spider bites
Spiders can bite, but most spider bites are harmless and will improve without any special treatment. Washing the site with soap and water is usually sufficient. If the bite hurts, you can also apply an ice pack to numb it. An age-appropriate dose of over-the-counter pain medication may also be helpful. Some spider bites can be more serious, but these are rare. The black widow and brown recluse spiders are of greater concern. These spiders can be found in the Southern United States.

  • Symptoms may include:
  • Swelling
  • Fluid-filled blister (brown recluse only)
  • Increasing pain and stiffness
  • Chills
  • Fever

Call your pediatrician immediately if your child has any of the above symptoms. If the bite is on your child’s arm or leg, elevate it while seeking medical advice. Allergic reactions are rare but require immediate attention. Bug bites and stings can be scary, but most only cause temporary discomfort. Severe reactions are rare. Children are usually back to normal before you know it.

Contact your pediatric office if you have further concerns or questions!

What clients are saying ...

Dr Bob has been seeing my twins since they got out of the NICU and we love him. Very attentive, very nice, knowledgeable and understanding.

We recently moved so now it takes us up to 45 minutes to get there when it used to take us 15 minutes but we’ll never change doctors.

The office is always clean and the staff is super nice, highly recommended

I love Celebration Pediatrics. The office staff is so kind and always willing to accommodate me when I need a last minute appointment or to reschedule. The doctors and nurses are also incredible.

My family loves Dr. Anwer, he is a remarkable doctor. You can tell he is very passionate about his career and genuinely loves his patients which is so important. He doesn’t treat my kids like just another patient but instead takes his time to ask questions and really understand our concerns.

I really could not recommend this office and Doctor enough!

Fantastic doctors, nurses, and staff! Patient, listen, educate, answer every question, and spend adequate time with each patient.

I have found that the doctors at this location are intelligent and educated in a wide realm of topics which makes the experience much richer, especially when it is your first child!

Quick to get patients a visit when needed and we usually don’t wait more than 5-10 min to be seen.

We are very happy and pleased to have found this place for our girls. We have recently moved from another state and the transition to this office was very smooth.

The staff was so helpful in making sure that the needed records for our girls were obtained from our prior provider. Our girls also loved the visit with NP Janil.

Would highly recommend this office.

We had our first newborn appointment at the practice and felt so comfortable. Monica was very easy to talk to and eased some of our little worries as first time parents.

She was patient, sweet, and very knowledgeable!

We left our appointment feeling very secure and with the practice that we chose!
